About Bright Beehive
Bright Beehive was set up in May 2009 by Nick O'Doherty and Cormac Heron.
Together Nick and Cormac have over 35 years of technical, change management and leadership skills, and have held a number of management roles most recently in PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
Our purpose in setting up Bright Beehive was to provide help and guidance to businesses who feel Social Media might have something to offer their organisation but are not sure where to start. Our approach is not technology driven. We do not jump into products and solutions. Our generic advice would be, once you understand what Social Media might offer, think, with our help about some key questions:
- What problem are you trying to solve or what opportunity do you want to capitalise upon?
- What benefits will ensue if you are successful?
- What businesses changes will lead to these benefits?

Nick O'Doherty

Nick's avatarNick's background was originally IT and sales. Prior to PwC Nick managed UK and Scandinavia Executive Programs for Gartner, leading a team that offered advice, guidance and purposeful networking to IT directors. In PwC Nick joined as IT director, led an internal management consultancy group, and became head of Knowledge Management. In this role Nick sponsored Social Media pilots in various parts of the firm, and took an active role in determining strategy to optimise benefits of Social Media.
Despite IT being a major part of his career, Nick says, "Technology is of little interest once you have got over the novelty aspect. It's what it enables and more importantly how people interact with it and use it to enhance their interaction with others." Nick was initially a reluctant convert to Social Media, accepting its value only when he saw benefits demonstrated.
Outside of work, Nick is an enthusiastic if amateur gardener, more interested in fruit and vegetables than flowers (other than roses, honeysuckle, sweet peas, ...) A beekeper, hence the photograph, and to some extent a reason for the name of the company. A hedge-layer and occasional dry stone waller. When the weather is too bad to get outdoors, or guests have said no to hedge-laying. Nick enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with family and friends chatting or playing games.
Cormac Heron
Cormac's avatarCormac's history of Social Computing goes all the way back to 2000 when he was manager of Knowhere Guide, the UK's largest user generated guide of UK and Ireland. When it comes to online user behaviour Cormac is up on it. He embraces Social Media and uses many of its manifestations easily and in an integrated fashion. His blogging dates as far back as 2001. There are things he will not share on the web, but not much.
In PwC Cormac was key to delivering a number of Social Media pilot sites, including delivering Facebook type technology to account teams, introducing wikis, and encouraging senior managers to blog by his own example and with occasional subtle mentoring. Cormac's energy and directness are legendary. When he wanted to find out more about Web 2.0 he went to the horse's mouth and asked Euan Semple to mentor him.
Cormac's skills are multiple and his background broad. On the one hand he is an entertainer: an accomplished musician of seven instruments with a penchant for the banjo and a lapsed stiltwalker and balloon modeller. On the other he is an interviewer and writer, providing copy for musical reviews for BBC. He is also a Social Media consultant with a background in website design, implementation and management.
Nick and Cormac have started from different places but have converging views on the social computing domain, and complementary capabilities.
