Whilst I don't think Mr Fry will leave Twitter I am reminded of how a point Nick O'Doherty made at a presentation a number of weeks ago.
- Mind what you say!
- It seems that no matter what you say someone can take offence at it. They can think that it's offensive or the other extreme (as in @brumplum's case), boring.
- Everything is connected!
- You cannot be really nice on the web in some places and then horrible in other places. The "connectedness" of the web means that you will be found out.
There is another point which was made at the presentation around transparency. If someone offends you then it is best to deal with it in a transparent and timely manner. That means that all the parties concerned come out with dignity and the matter is resolved and everyone can move on.
How will all of this affect Twitter? It won't. Twitter will carry on as normal. It will highlight the importance of online etiquette however.
